It's Been Awhile...

Hello Hello!

I feel bad for neglecting my blog when I told myself I would update it more.

Just been busy with work that I haven't really had time to do anything else.

But now that work is dying down a bit... starting to pick things back up again before I start my other job.

iPad Adventures

Did another little digital painting on my iPad.
I know there's things to fix body-wise and other things (colors, shadows, highlights, folds, etc)... but I'm going to correct them later when I feel like it hahah. Just wanted to post this up.

Anyways I watched a music video of one of K.Will's new songs and the main girl wore an outfit like this in the video. So I thought why not. While watching movies on my laptop, I just busted out the iPad and started drawing. And I gotta say, I'm having a lot of fun painting on the iPad (especially ever since I bought the stylus for my iPad. If you want to paint on your iPad... GET ONE).

I'm using a program called Brushes it allows me to just focus on only painting since there's just your basic painting tools. Especially since I've seen fellow colleagues doing more digital paintings, I've just been itching to do some too (I admit... I get easily influenced hahah). But I will say that working on the iPad, I gotta learn to take breaks or my eyes just get fuzzy after a while hahah.

Already started working on another one. And it's convenient to have my iPad with me when I'm on the go so I can just bust it out and just paint (or play massive amounts of games).

So I finally decided to buy a stylus for the iPad. Since I have a few digital painting programs on the iPad, I wanted to give it a shot. So while watching Archer (btw it's a must watch!), I just decided to doodle something quick since it's been awhile I've digitally painted and this is what I came up with. Hahah so much to improve on... but just thought I'd post anyways :)

Got bored again so I just quickly made another wallpaper out of one of my Series.
It's kind of fun taking them and turning them into wallpapers :)
Obviously they're not the best (and they all tend to be in the bottom left)
but they're just for my amusement right now.
Also, I get bored with wallpapers easily so I like to change it up a lot.

Again, thanks to the wonderfully talented Thomas Yamaoka for doing a trade with me. Hahah he definitely captured my tomboy-ness so well :) So check out his work! He's an amazing concept artist and he's wow'ed me with his talented self since my first year at Otis (and he's always been so helpful and generous since day one!)

Also, Jaw Cooper, another talented Otis kid I'm so privileged in knowing, did a raffle on her blog and I happened to win one of her original little paintings! Hahah I've admired her work for years and I'm finally excited to have an original on my wall. Her work is definitely worth checking out. An amazing illustrator/concept artist who keeps shaBAMMING the world with her awesomeness!

Always good seeing them and good times getting together and just work :)

And I like how the last one looks more like a plump Smurfette... but with shorter hair and musical.
And I'm still continuing on!
Although I will admit that I'm running into a creative block since I had a bit of trouble coming up with more to do. But hopefully I'll be able to think of more things to do for the series!

Squidy Squidy Squid Boy!!

DANCE! DANCE YOUR TROUBLES AWAY WITH SQUID BOY!

So this painting was done awhile ago, but just never had the chance to scan it
(I got lazy with this part since this illustration is much larger than my scanner).

This was an assignment for Nathan Ota's class from Fall semester at SMC. We were to take a piece of dialogue/personal note/etc. and illustrate it. The note which I based this painting off of was from my lovely and dear, dear friend, Ree Jae (Yu) Chi. During my first year at Otis, Ree Jae would constantly write me little notes and put them in a box. One of them, Reej drew a squid & juke box on a napkin that said in Korean "I am Squid Boy!"

And thus, made an illustration based off of it in my style. And I gotta say, I had a lot of fun with this illustration since I got to paint a baby squid :) Since I never incorporate creatures into my artwork, I was able to! This illustration was done in acrylics and it's 15 X 20 in.

And so it continues!
Felt like painting with gouache but not on a large scale, so I busted out all the 4 x 4 papers I had and just painted.
Then that led to creating all the other ones.
And thus... continuing on with "the SERIES"

NOTE:
I realized after I painted #081, that it just looked like a random Simpson's character I made into one of my characters.
Wasn't done intentionally.
That was the next colored paper in my paper stack that needed some randomness on it.
And there's no specific order in which paper I paint on.
I literally just cut a bunch of paper... tossed them onto a floor and gathered them all mixed up.
Just like how I used to "shuffle" playing cards when I was little.

Now For Some News...

So it's official!

I participated in G1988's show "Is This Thing On?" recently and did a tribute to Eddie Murphy in "Coming to America" (got sold during opening night). After the show's tremendous success, I was asked to contribute another piece for a closing show that they wanted to do. However because of timing, they couldn't go with it. But they still asked me to do another piece so they could possibly sell.

So I did Steve Martin in "The Jerk."

Turns out, G1988 wanted to make prints of both Eddie and Steve as a set!
That would mean this is the first time my artwork would be sold as prints!
Hahah I'm pretty sure it's not that big of deal (I know some very amazingly talented fellow art kids who have had prints and merchandise already made! And they're pretty much awesomeness)... but it definitely means something to me :)

So that's my new news for now.
Even if they don't do well successfully... at least I had the opportunity!

On Feb 11th, Gallery1988 Venice (formly SF) is having a show that pays tribute to John Hughes.
I decided to do the classic Sixteen Candles scene with the panties in the boy's bathroom.
However as you can tell, I thought a spin on it would've been fun.
Plus I'm pretty sure to a lot of us... it WOULD be the greatest undies ever!
I mean come on... that man is a LEGEND!

And I didn't get a chance to scan it
(I forgot to bring my scanner to the place I finished the painting at)
so I had to make-do with a camera.
So one hand isn't supposed to be darker than the other.
But if you see the painting in person... you'll know that.

Also like I mentioned in a previous post... I wanted to make more use out of my time and produce more artwork.
So I'm continuing doing some projects I've already started...
And I have plans for a new project that would definitely fit into my personality.
Also... got some more future shows that I'm going to be in further into 2011.

So as I posted previously, there was a show at G1988 Melrose titled "Is This Thing On?" that paid tribute to comedians from the past few decades.
For the show, I decided to do a piece off Eddie Murphy from Coming to America since its one of the more classic films I remembered him from growing up (and it got sold! yay!).

Well, there was supposed to be a closing show for the event since it was one of G1988's most popular show to date and they asked the artists and more to do some pieces for it.
I decided to do Steve Martin from The Jerk since I recently just saw the movie and loved it!
However because of scheduling, a closing show wasn't able to be fit in.
But, I was still asked to do another piece.

Cool news...
I shall tell later.
Not sure if it's going to happen or not... but if it does...
then it'll be pretty freakin' sweet!

threadless t-shirt design

hello hello!

so last night i was going through some of my art folders on my computer... and i realized there were some things that i've always wanted to try out for threadless... and i think now is the perfect time to try them out!

so right now, im just going through to see what would look good for t-shirt designs.
and i already picked one that i wanted to do for a year
(i wanted to silkscreen it myself but never had a good opportunity to do so).

this image i did for silkscreening class where we had to pick a song and do posters based off of them.
and right now the design is waiting to be submitted for voting...
so in a couple of days... if you like the design of it, then please vote for it!

hello hello! and happy 2011!

its definitely been some time since i've posted something here...
and thats shame on me.
but this year for sure, i would like to be more productive with my work.
gotta push myself some more so i can feel more proud of what i do.

so hopefully i can stick to that.
and i hope that the next few weeks i can at least see productivity from me.

i decided to do Eddie Murphy in "Coming to America"
i remember watching this movie a lot with my dad growing up and so this would be the most memorable eddie murphy film for me.
i watched it again for the show and i forgot how good it was!
and i definitely did not remember the beginning part to show how royal he was...
so obviously i would showcase that part!

titled: "The Royal Wash"
i mean come on... im pretty sure he would thoroughly enjoy this all the time!

and yes... the show has already begun.
and i went there opening night and it was crazy packed!
lots of people were there.
and i wouldnt blame them since there were some really amazing work there!
i wish i couldve had time to look at them some more but it was just too crowded.
plus because of all the people, it was really really hot in there.
but definitely gonna go back and check out the artwork some more!
and good note when i went: my piece was already sold by the time i got there!
so that was a really good surprise for me :)

but i definitely recommend people to go and check out the show!
plus, there were some fellow otis kids in the show who also had amazing stuff!
so yes. go!

its starting up again.

i thought these were good practices for me as a way to find what im more comfortable using and to broaden my mediums. in the process of doing these, i ended up doing a range of people doing/saying different things, wearing assortment of outfits, etc etc. and when i first started this, i had the urge to keep doing different things to keep broadening my creativity and ideas and i found it to be pretty fun.

so since i've been going through a creative block... i thought i'd start these up again to help fuel the mind.
on top of all of these, i plan on doing more things that would help pave a path for me as to what i want to do.
i have so many ideas on what i can do that i dont know how i can contain it.
so hopefully i'm able to follow through with them and see where i end up!

and talking with fawnfruits, daniel lim, he wanted me to try another approach with some of my illustrations while looking through my sketchbook (my other moleskin one) and try digitally painting them (i mean... i was in digital for majority of my years at otis hahah). some of them i have ideas of actually spending time and painting them more rendered.. but i thought i'd have some fun and try doing a simple digital painting (mostly flat colors) of one of my letter people. and i picked the letter P.

on top of that, to help motivate me... i made it my background on my laptop so it would make me want to do more

very random, i know.
but im taking an acrylic painting class taught by my professor/friend, nathan ota.
just learning about acrylic painting techniques.
and actually, i never really got the chance to learn the techniques when i went into illustration since by the time i joined, nathan had already gone over those demos.
so i think this is a good opportunity for me to learn these and its not too bad.

so heres the outcome of our dry brush assignment.
used photo reference but altered the image a bit.
and i never painted a realistic-looking person while at otis (this excludes digital paintings)...
so i had fun doing this :)

and like i said, these are just my way of incorporating a little lettering with my characters.
they dont take too long... which is good.

note: i have a small obsession with ball-point pens.. and its hard to find a GOOD one.
so if any of you (if there is any of you who look at this page hahah) have a suggestion for a good pen (one that doesnt clump up ink or loses its richness in black) that wont cost a lot... let me know!

thought i'd participate in it since i havent been using my time creatively and to stop being so lazy!

anyways, the theme that i chose was NIGHT TIME STORIES.
already started a few things in there, but just thought i'd show the first page of the sketchbook (and quality of the image isnt so good since i just took a picture of it with my phone. when i have time to go scan, then i shall!).
also i realized, i'm able to work better when i have some theme or assignment to follow.
otherwise i think i'm pretty useless coming up with something on my own.

so i silkscreened two character designs on brown cardstock with white word bubbles.

so they can either be left blank...

or whenever i meet someone.. i can write anything in there.

it can be a personal message i think about them...

had to create poster based off of music.

it was up to us how we interpreted it.

so i present...

mc mong's indian boy.

i have better copies.. but this was the only scan i have of it with me.

i believe its 18 x 22in.

i think i still have the image for this that can be burned onto a screen.

so who knows?

maybe i could add this to my shirt collection :)

and so the numbers stuck with me for some odd reason.

so...

i had the urge... to do a sketch that had numbers

(again.. random and odd.. i know)

but random and odd is always a good combinations :)

(accidentally dropped water on it from my water bottle and it left a cool white outline.

so i just splashed water on it :) no harm)

EPISODE: THE HOWLING MAN

the episode is pretty much about how a man deceives others with his innocent appearance asking to be free.. even though hes actually the devil.

the piece is almost done.

just need to work on a few details.

done with acryla gouache (love the matte finish :D)

havent done a sort of rendered out piece in a while.. so thought i'd give it a go.

WILLY WONKA

so the show 'crazy4cult' at gallery 1988 is artwork based on cult films. i chose to do willy wonka (1970's version). i wanted to illustrate what happened to each kid by the end of their wonka tour. and i arranged it all according to which kid got booted out first

anyways the show is july 16th at gallery 1988 los angeles!!

my first assignment as an illustrator. we had to pick and illustrate a limerick.. so thats what i did. its done with acyrlics. havent painted painted in so long.. and i know there are things i need to fix up.. but i still liked how it came out :)

THE WALL

thats my series put together on the wall at my school :). i wanted to find a way to do a large drawing and relate it to my little ones.. but the small ones were so random.. so i thought "whats a good way to show random moments as one sort of display?" so i came up with a boy taking pictures of random moments in life :)

btw its the first time im showing my illustrations at school... so yay yay :D

(sorry if the image looks dark. my laptop screen brightness is waaaaaay low these days and its highly contrasted and i cant seem to fix it unless i pay a good amount of moooolah for it. so yes yes...)

to me.. everytime i looked at my page and saw the images i scanned from my moleskin.. it did not make me feel like a happy camper. so i decided to rescan the images and put in a few more that i did.

me and my series

the photo was taken last week courtesy of my roomie reejae :)
i wanted to see how it would look like put together on a wall.. so i got some tape and just taped them onto my wall in my room.. and i gotta say.. i like the feeling where i keep adding more and more when i finish each one. the more i finish.. the more filled up my wall looks. seriously.. great feeling.

i havent updated the blog in sometime.. just because i havent done as much as i hoped in the past few weeks (its been raining crazy over my head). but i will make an update very very soon (hopefully tomorrow)

now so far.. i've used pencil, color pencils, ink, markers, watercolors, poster color, and acrylics (for those wondering :) btw thanks for those who commented. hahah didnt know people actually really looked at this.. so thank you very very much!! you definitely boost up my self-esteem with these :D)

so yes yes. im so glad im broadening my range of materials with this. im definitely getting a feel of all different sort of things. trying to think of some more things i can do with these and some new materials or ways to show them. oooh yes yes and i do like how they're adding up :) i know its not that much of an update with drawings.. but at least its an update :) yay. hopefully by next week i'll have around 50 of them (btw i definitely have to rescan some images from the previous entry because my scanning job was crap)

oh and another yes yes :) only a few of my friends know this.. but i reserved some numbers in the series to be dedicated to my close friends and family :) so i already got my roommate judith down for no. 028, my bf yong for no.035, and me for no. 024 :) i pick the numbers according to their lucky numbers or birthdays and also doing some other sneaky peeky way of picking their numbers ;) but yes yes. so i hope you guys enjoy!!

im slowly building it up.. but its getting to be quite fun for me :) they're random, they're awkward, they're strange.. they're completely me and i love it hahah. im trying to get a certain amount done each week so that i'll have a somewhat decent amount soon. so we'll see how these turn out. im getting pretty excited :)

(btw when i scanned them, it was true to color, but i uploaded these on my laptop and the colors definitely seem way darker.. so if it seems dark, they're all pretty much lighter colors. use some imagination)

so yes. im participating in a experimental illustration class this semester to prepare myself for the illustration world (im making the transition from one major to another). so for my project, i decided to do a series of my characters using different types of medium ON different types of medium. going to try to broaden my range of mediums that i use so that i can get used to more things. though there are mediums i get frustrated using.. this is only going to be beneficial to me to improve :) so im pretty excited about this project. my teacher and i decided that it should become some sort of installation-type display. there was more discussion about the direction of my project.. but i dont want to get ahead of myself :)

so again.. so yes. in conclusion.. im excited and happy to take my drawings more towards the public. hope you enjoy :)

i bought a new smaller brown recycled paper sketchbook for specifically my little doodles instead of drawing them on random pages in my other brown sketchbook. and in this one.. i wanted to strictly do it with ink so that i dont get too focused on what i messed up on (the moleskin one is strictly pencil to focus and improve on shading). whatever lines i put down.. is whatever lines get put down. what i love is that even though while im drawing it at first it looks so messy... i just love the outcome of it :) so yeah. im gradually adding a little bit more color to it. bought one of those sakura white gel pens, a pink marker, and restocked on prisma and straedtler black pens. so we'll see how things turn out :)
